Movie Day With the Kids (Fantastic 4, War of the Worlds, & King Kong)

~
Took Alex and Zack to see Fantastic Four and War of the Worlds back to back the other day. Here are a few observations and reflections from the experience:

1) Who woulda thought "the Commish" woulda made such an excellent Thing?

2) Seeing Micahael Chiklis again made me pine for Theresa Saldana (the actress who played the Commish's wife).

3) Apparently, I find weasly faced women attractive.

4) The Fantastic Four movie was not as bad as everyone's saying it is. I'll probably never watch it again, but it was a fine, fun way to kill two hours with seven- and thirteen-year-old boys.

5) Despite my general snobbery, I am not a purist. I am a huge Fantastic Four Fan from way back, and I am not at all bothered by the liberties the filmmakers took with the original story line.

6) I also was not bothered by the liberties Spielburg took with War of the Worlds. It barely resembles H.G. WElls' original story, but who gives a crap? It was an EXCELLENT movie!

7) As much as I am loathe to admit it, Tom Cruise was actually quite good in War of the Worlds.

8) Tom Cruise owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to P.T. Anderson, because P.T. was the first director (Magnolia) to realize, "Hey, this guy is an asshole... So why don't we have play an asshole?"

9) Anyone who would walk two miles in the mid-day Sacramento summertime heat just to see a movie is crazier than Tom Cruise.

10) Holy crap! The trailers for Peter Jackson's King Kong look FANTASTIC! I'm an even bigger King Kong fan than I am a Fantastic Four fan. In fact, King Kong is nothing short of sacred to me. I still haven't forgiven John Guillerman for that 1976 catastrophe, but Peter Jackson's redo looks like it'll be a fitting tribute.

Have you seen Michael Chiklis's new(ish) show The Shield? It's on FX, and since I don't have cable I only catch it when I'm traveling or whoring cable from a friend. For a cop show it's excellent, and Chiklis is very good as the lead.

And his decision to shave his head was a good one--instantly transformed him from a pathetic Hair-Club-for-Men member to a tough guy. (Though, to be honest, it disturbs me a bit, because he now looks EXACTLY like my child-molesting neighbor.)

HOLY HELL. That King Kong trailer does look good. And I've never been particularly fond of King Kong.

I mean, hey, look: Jack Black and Colin Hanks, back together again! ;-)

I've always liked Jack Black, even though most of my friends HATE him. Tenacious D is very funny to me. I just never get tired of two guys with ACOUSTIC guitars pretending they're power rock superstars. Jack Black's who I wanna be when I grow up.

Yeah, me too. I love that a short, pudgy guy is a major movie attraction. Makes one feel good.

I am with ya. I think he can be pretty funny.

Okay, so maybe not ALL my friends hate Jack Black.

Didn't Jack Black used to be a club rocker? I could've sworn I've seen a "Jack Black" play a few times at a rock club in Gainesville in the 90s. He played good, lean, three-chord biker rock. The shows weren't well-attended, but it looks like the same guy . . .

Not Frank Black? Or Jack White?

I don't know enough about Jack Black's history to know if he was clubbin' in the 90s. By then, he was already a movie star, so I'm guessing he would have found small Gainesville clubs a little too small time. But I could be wrong.

Pretty sure it was Jack Black literally, but still could be wrong. It really did look like him, but with a li'l moustache/beard thing added. I'll see.

He often has a beard/moustache thing, so...

You are correct. I remember that show.

Thanks for #5: Despite general snobbery, not a purist. That's me for movies, but I'm still a proud tight-ass when it comes to books.
